David Brown, Implementation Consultant

David Brown joined the company in February as an Implementation Consultant specializing in the Prophesy Transport  and AccellosOne Optimize solutions. He comes to Accellos with a solid 12-year background in transportation and logistics, as well as Lean Six Sigma certification, a MCSE Equivalent certification and numerous Microsoft certifications.

“I feel Accellos is a great fit for me because it allows me to continue utilizing my specialized logistic software background,” said Brown. “With 12 years of experience under my belt, I can bring immediate value to the company and its customers and be able to hit the ground running with minimal training – what a nice fit!”

Cloud delivery models will inevitably redefine the ERP software market and the ecosystems that support it. From ERP software publishers to their channels and independent software vendors, there will be no escaping the impact of cloud computing.

A Tipping Point

SaaS ERP providers like NetSuite have painstakingly defined the SaaS delivery ERP category over a number of years. The emerging credibility of this deployment model is forcing the on-premise ERP publishers (like Microsoft, Sage and SAP) to rethink their businesses.

Microsoft, SAP and Sage have each released subscription pricing for their existing product offerings, making 2012 what appears to be the tipping point for the shift in vendor acceptance of the new model — no doubt as a result of the shifting consumer acceptance of both the delivery model and pricing paradigm.

ERP Publishers

Given that most on-premise ERP solutions are not optimized for multi-tenant deployment, the reaction has been to counter the SaaS model ERP pricing with a choice of platform delivery, including on-premise or hosted but with a subscription-based price.

The hope is that subscription pricing will be the catalyst for increased sales-volumes. The thinking is that the new pricing model will create incentive for businesses to consider a shorter ERP replacement cycle rather than the cannibalization of existing market share.

However, there are some inherent challenges that need to be overcome before we see the volume growth in the ERP replacement market, the greatest of which will be the inescapable services requirement to implement a new ERP and the business process reengineering that will inevitably slow down sales cycles.

This means that software companies will need to devise strategies to overcome a reduction in revenue as they build up their subscription base. This may include a reduction in software and support margins as well as a rationalization of channel partners to eliminate those that are not increasing their sales volumes.

Channel Partners

Given the dramatic change in pricing, ERP channel partners now contend with diminished software and support margins. They too need to rethink their business model to reduce cost of sales, increase sales volumes, become more services-centric, or all of the above. Business as usual is not an option.

Channel partners will be forced into considering alternative revenue opportunities like the provision of software and services around ISV applications to enlarge the solution footprint that they offer to their existing customers.

(ISVs) Independent Software Vendors

ISV solutions will need to align with the software delivery and pricing models of the ERP solutions, therefore creating the same revenue issues that have been contemplated by the ERP software providers.

However, there is one major difference; ISV solutions represent a “greenfield” opportunity to grow the market, rather than swapping market share. Channel partners selling add-on solutions to companies that don’t have software to manage a specific area of their business (like warehouse management or EDI) is an opportunity to grow the pie, rather than taking from someone else.

This is the bright light for ISV solutions in all of this turmoil. The enlargement of the solution footprint for specific vertical markets will become increasingly meaningful to the entire ecosystem. Replacement software dollars against the loss in ERP revenues will need to come from selling solutions into the existing customer base as well as enlarging the value proposition at the point of new sale.
